When to use Urgotul® Start or UrgoCell® Start TLC?
Urgotul® Start and UrgoCell® Start TLC promote faster healing in chronic wounds (greater than 4-6 weeks in duration). It is essential to use these dressings on chronic wounds free from infection which means that before using Start, wounds must be assessed for signs of critical colonisation. In particular, the following signs of infection must be considered:
- Oedema?
- Friable granulation tissue?
- Abundant exudate?
- Perilesional erythema?
- Malodor?
- Excessive pain or pain between dressing changes?
If the wound is thought to be infected, it should be treated with an antimicrobial dressing (Urgotul® SSD, Urgotul® Silver, or Urgocell® Silver) prior to using Urgotul® Start or UrgoCell® Start TLC, which can be used once the wound is free from infection. Silver wound dressings: A topical issue
In our previous news letter we introduced the subject of the use of silver dressings, which currently seems to be the main topic of conversation with medical researchers. The VULCAN study has been widely discussed, and is now being commented on by Key Opinion Leaders.
Richard White, Professor of Tissue Viability, University of Worcester, commented on the study in MedTech Business journal this month. His article argues that the medical devaluation of silver is potentially dangerous and goes on to explain how serious methodological flaws have been found in the recent VULCAN trial publication, the central flaw being the “prolonged use of silver dressings, without clinical justification contrary to current best practice”. K Two® and the benefit of ‘Optic Marks’ – achieving accurate pressures

One of the main aspects affecting the correct application of pressure for venous leg ulcer bandaging is the ability of the clinician actually applying the bandages. Training, education and practice is essential and even then, it is not always easy to ensure that the correct pressure has been applied
‘Optic marks’ (pressure indicators) can greatly help the clinician to achieve the required therapeutic pressure and a paper discussing this topic was presented by Dr Dissemond from University Hospital, Essen at the EWMA 2010 conference in May, promoting the benefits of this. The paper concluded that applied pressures are far more accurate when pressure indicators are present on the bandages and can even benefit carers who may be required to bandage, especially when the patient is on holiday.
The study, soon to be published, included K Two® which has an ‘etalonnage’ which stretches from an ellipse to a circle when the correct pressure is reached and has proved to be extremely popular with nurses helping them achieve accurate pressures versus other bandage systems without an ‘optic mark’. European Wound Management Association (EWMA)
Once again, Urgo Medical was present at the EWMA Annual conference, which this year was held in Geneva from 25 – 28th May with the theme “Get the timing right”.
It was a very dynamic and well-attended conference and the Urgo stand, which was brightly decked out in red, yellow and blue for Start, Urgotul® and K Two® respectively, attracted many delegates from all four corners of the globe. Many were keen to have a ‘hands on’ go at bandaging with K Two®, experiencing the ease of using the etalonnage and the ability to put their shoes on once bandaged, whatever their ankle size.
